BFFs - BEADING FRIEND FRIDAY

This is the FIRST post for my new weekly series, BFF- Beading Friend Friday. So who else could I choose to be my FIRST subject but my very FIRST bead swap partner, Marla Gibson of Spice Box Designs.

Here are her vital statistics:

  • Marla Gibson lives in Northeast Mississippi, the birthplace of Elvis Presley! (Marla: Go ahead Google it!You know you want to!Actually I live about 5 miles in a small town north from there.)
  • She has been happily married since St. Patrick’s Day, 2005. (Marla: My husband is my best critic and supporter.)
  • She has one wonderful daughter, Trinity who is 10 years old and sometimes can be seen on Marla’s blog modeling her work.
  • They have 2 dogs, a Boxer named Samson, and a long haired Teacup Chihuahua named Mojo. They also have 2 birds, one is a Green Cheek Conure named Mango and the other is a Pearl Cockatiel named Lilly.
  • Marla loves to read and says her Kindle is her best friend! She love music as well and is really into Florence and the Machine!

Now that you have the vitals,go ahead and grab your coffee, sit down and learn more about his phenomenal artist -

.

BFF: What do you do with beads?

Marla: I am a Beadweaver.I refuse to call it anything else or spell it any other way.It reminds me of a Spellweaver in a fantasy world, of course some of the stuff you weave could use a spell or two to get the thread untangled lol.

BFF: How would you describe your role in the beading world?

Marla: That is a very good question and one I have not really pondered before. The first one that pops in my head would be artist. Not trying to sound condescending but isn’t that basically what a creator and designer are?

BFF: How long have you been working with beads?

Marla: I started in May of 2011.So a bit over a year.I am a Newbie!

BFF: What is your style? And what attracts you to this style?

Marla: I prefer simple pieces that allow the work to speak for itself.I try not to let one style define me.

BFF: What are your favorite metals to use?

Marla: I love antique copper! There is just something about it that sings to me.The depth and warmth are just so amazing. And honestly every color looks good with antique copper!

BFF: What is your favorite stringing medium to use?

Marla: I weave with Fireline exclusively, but with bead embroidery I prefer Nymo.Trust me on this, if you want to try beadweaving;use the best materials you can afford because it makes it so much easier to learn! And yes, Fireline is expensive but you will thank me for it later I promise!

BFF: What is your favorite color palette?

Marla: Earth tones or jewel tones, I am finding myself to be more of a monochromatic type person which dismays me.So I am trying to break out of that rut.(Please send me more seed beads so I have more choices in color)Ha!

BFF: Your best technique(s)?

Marla: Right Angle Weave. I love it.2 beads and 2 beads make 4 beads!(Black Adder Reference)

BFF: What else would you like to try your hand at?

Marla: Glass Blowing! But that will probably never happen considering where I live, sigh.

BFF: Other artist/designer(s) you admire? Any special reason why?

Marla:

Metal Working - Melinda Orr.I just love how creative she is and it always amazes me the colors and shapes she can coax out of metal.

Bead Embroidery:Jamie Cloud Eakin. Her work is amazing and her books are fantastic! When I grow up I want to be just like her!

Stringing:Lesley Watt.I have yet to see something she makes that I do not like! Her use of design is out of this world.
Knotting:Sherri Hartmann Stokey. Her micro macramé is absolutely stunning and she is such a nice person too!

Polymer Clay:Barbara Bechtel. Her polymer clay beads are just fantastic. The colors and shapes are so amazing, her work is always original.

BeadWeaving:Sabine Lippert. Her new book is so amazing and a must have on all beadweavers bookshelves!Plus her use of Right Angle Weave is oolala!

Glasswork:Donna Millard. I am always amazed by her work, it is the best translation of art glass that I have ever seen. Also, her hand must be really, really steady!

BFF: Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

Marla: I do not know where I am going, I just know I am on my way!

BFF: What’s your favorite quote or saying?

Marla:

“The road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began
Now far ahead the road has gone
And I must follow if I can.
Pursuing it with eager feet
Until it joins some greater way
Where many paths and errands meet
And whither then? I cannot say." J.R.R. Tolkien<3

BFF: Any advice you'd give to new artists who are just beginning in your medium?

Marla: Youtube! Youtube!Youtube! There are so many artists that have free videos up on Youtube that can teach you pretty much whatever you want to know. Two that I recommend for bead weaving are:

·TSummerlee is amazing at bead weaving and is such fun to listen to as well!

·Kelly is such a great teacher and you up loads new tutorials every week.

BFF: What is your favorite blog that you like to follow?

Marla: Pretty Things by Lori Anderson has to be my favorite one.You never know what you are going to find there and her voice is so honest and witty. Sadly Lori seems to catch some unfair criticisms from some of her readers LBe nice to Lori or you will have a conversation with my fist!(I am kidding!Well sort of!)
BFF: What has been your favorite Blog Hop or Challenge?

Marla: Favorite Blog Hop so far would have to be the 7000 Bracelets of Hope Project. 7000 Bracelets of Hope is run through the Global Genes Project, a rare disease group for children. The bracelets are donated to the mothers and caretakers of these children, as a way to give them a little support and lift their spirits. You can read more about it here: http://spiceboxdesigns.blogspot.com/2012/02/7000-bracelets-of-hope-blog-hop-reveal.html

Quirky questions often give us a better understanding of the real person behind the artist, so here goes

Marla: My Western Flyer 10 Speed bicycle.I loved it! It gave me my first taste of freedom from parental oppression lol.I was never home after I received it.I would ride down the road with no hands with my hair flowing in the wind.Don’t do that now!People will run you over!(No Bike Lanes in the South and they wonder why we are the most obese /sigh)

BFF: Favorite subject in school? why?

Marla: Art was always my favorite subject in school.I had such fantastic Art Teachers. They were not only teaching me art techniques but they also really tried to teach me to have faith in myself. They never did conquer the control freak issue I have however lol.

BFF: What was your favorite YEAR of your life thus far? why?

Marla: 2001 was my favorite year because that was the year my daughter was born.

Words from the artist, herself:

“ The one thing that has really amazed me about this journey that I am on is how much fellowship the jewelry artists share. They are always so helpful to one another and it really does feel like a great big family. (That being said I hope I don’t piss someone off!) There are some really great groups on Facebook that you can join to learn and share. I have been welcomed with open arms into this family and while I have only met one or two people from it I consider a few of them some of my closest friends."

Thanks for coming by! and SPECIAL thanks to Marla Gibson for sharing with us all!

BFF: What do you do with beads? (weaving, stringing, lampworking, polymer, etc)

AMY: Hoarding and stringing

BFF: How would you describe your role in the beading world?

AMY: Tireless purchaser of beads large and small, exuberant blogger and bead stringer

BFF: How long have you been working with beads?

AMY: Six years

BFF: What is your style? And what attracts you to this style?

AMY: I love color and symmetry. I’ve tried to do asymmetrical designs, but my beady OCD just wants those beads to line up all symmetrical. So I’m going with that for now J

BFF: What are your favorite metals to use?

AMY: Copper, copper and more copper.

BFF: What is your favorite stringing medium to use?

AMY: Beading wire, sometimes waxed linen. I love leather cording but I bought cording that is too fat for most bead holes, so I gotta work on that (i.e. buy thinner cording or buy beads with bigger holes, basically I need to bead shop more)

BFF: What is your favorite color palette?

AMY: I would say orange and blue. My bead stash would say blue and green, because those are the drawers that are overflowing.

BFF: Your technique(s)?
AMY: ?

BFF: What else would you like to try your hand at?

AMY: Nothing. Not a thing. I’ve already tried polymer clay, torch and kiln enameling, cold connection metal work, wire wrapping, felting, resin, etc, etc. My poor wallet and storage space cannot handle another new thing.

BFF: Other artist/designer(s) you admire? Any special reason why?

AMY: Lorelei- I love her designs and her great personality. I love Kerry Bogert’s use of color and her blog (it was one of the first bead blogs I started reading)

AMY: Sitting in a bead room, surrounded by beads, makin’ stuff.

BFF: What’s your favorite quote or saying?
AMY: "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." Picasso.

BFF: Any advice you'd give to new artists who are just beginning in your medium?
AMY: Don’t get intimidated by people with more sales, more followers, more beads, “better”designs. Just do your stuff, try to do it consistently, and be yourself and things will fall into place.

BFF: What is your favorite blog that you like to follow?
AMY: That’s kinda like asking me which of my houseplants is my favorite – I’ll never tell!

BFF: What has been your favorite Blog Hop or Challenge?

Inspired by "This Is Just To Say" ~ William Carlos Williams
AMY: I really love Erin Prais-Hintz’s blog hops – she has such clever and creative hop prompts.

Quirky questions often give us a better understanding of the real person behind the artist, so here goes…

BFF: If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?

AMY: Oh, I hadn’t really thought about it. I guess a beach house in Oregon right on the coast, with tons of gardens and a two story bead studio overlooking the ocean. (Okay, I have thought about it. A lot)

BFF: As a child what was your favorite cartoon or tv show?
AMY: The Frugal Gourmet, Facts of Life, Golden Girls…

BFF: Favorite subject in school? why?
AMY: English– love reading.

Okay, now it's my turn... did ya'all know that besides being a outstanding artist and jewelry designer, Ms. Amy is also a very caring and giving person? She has given close to $1500 in donations to wonderful organizations such as 7000 Bracelets, Ears to You, Garden of Innocence, local community organization and more? What a love she is... thank you Amy for sharing yourself with me and the BFF readers.

This week's featured artist is Sherri Hartman Stokey, of Knot Just Macrame!

I love Sherri! She's such a sweetheart. But besides that, her work with micro macramé is outstanding and inspiring. Come- learn more about my friend, Sherri!

VITALS:

Real Name? Sherri Stokey. Sherri Lynn to familyJ Yes, a bit like Elsie May or Billy Bob or John Boy…

Location? North Platte, NE. Take a pin and stick it smack dab in the middle of the continental USA then scootch it just a teeny bit to the left – that’s me!

Marital Status or Relationship? Married to the same man for 26 years
Children? Two offspring. My son is just a week shy of 20 years old and my daughter is 16.

Pets? One big, lazy, loveable Black Lab; one retired police service dog (German Shepherd); one spoiled rotton mini-doxie; and a garage cat.

Other hobbies or interests? Everything! I’m an Aries – I like to try everything and I bore easilyJ Right now I’m obsessed with anything bead-related , but I’ve done ceramics, sewing, cross stitch, stained glass, cake decorating, scrapbooking and genealogy (I’m probably forgetting a bunch of stuff, but that should give you an idea). I love to cook and I really love to travel. I like fantasy and science fiction (not to worry, I haven’t attended a convention yet and don’t own any costumes LOL) and everything history related. Oh, and ancient Egypt – everything about that fascinates me.

These interviews are shared with my blog readers but are really for me, I love to know what is behind the art. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

BFF: What do you do with beads?

SHERRI: I do mostly macramé – and I prefer micro macrame with thin cords and tiny seed beads. But I’ve done some stringing, some bead embroidery, some weaving… I want to do everything (remember, I’m an Aries –that’s my new excuse for everything!).

BFF: How would you describe your role in the beading world?

SHERRI: I’m not sure I HAVE a role in the beading world. I’m just over here in my own world doing what I love to do and sharing it with anyone interested enough to watch.

BFF: How long have you been working with beads?
SHERRI: If you count the first time I did macramé back in the 70’s, for about 40 years LOL. But I did take a pretty big break in thereJ I’ve got interested again about 5 years ago.

BFF: What is your style? And what attracts you to this style?
SHERRI: I don’t think I have a style, unless “whatever I like at the moment” counts. Sometimes I like everything fussy and feminine, sometimes casual and grungy.

Statement Necklace

BFF: What are your favorite metals to use?
SHERRI: I use antiqued copper and brass mostly. And antiqued silver. I usually can’t afford sterling and gold just seems too formal for me.

BFF: What is your favorite stringing medium to use?
SHERRI: I don’t do enough stringing to have an opinionJ

BFF: What is your favorite color palette?
SHERRI: Teal, aqua, seashore colors, definitely. I do belong to a challenge group which helps me move outside my comfort zone and try different color combos, though, and I think that’s good for me.

BFF: Your technique(s)?
SHERRI: Does this count? I like to pull out all the beads and findings and cord that might work in my design so I can see them together and try different combinations. I have almost as much fun digging through my stash and playing with my beads as I do actually creating a piece. I like to photograph my “palette” and my finish pieces – sort of a “before” and“after”. It’s just fun seeing how a pile of beads and cord can be transformed into something beautiful.

BFF: What else would you like to try your hand at?
SHERRI: Enameling – I bought a torch fired enamel kit and tried it once and I melted the window blinds, but I’m pretty sure that was a fluke. Looming- I bought an inexpensive loom, but haven’t tried it yet. Kumihimo – I bought the stuff for it… Are you seeing the trend here? Come to think of it, I think my “technique”is collecting.

BFF: Other artist/designer(s) you admire? Any special reason why?
SHERRI: Many! There are several lampwork artists I admire and I’d hate to name any and forget some, so I’ll just leave it at that. That’s a medium I don’t think I’d attempt so I really admire those who can create such beautiful beads.

Erin Simonetti and her loom work. She is doing some absolutely amazing piece that change the way I think of loomed pieces. I can’t wait for her book to come out.
BFF: Where do you want to be in 5 years from now?

SHERRI: Retired from my “regular” job, spending winters somewhere warm and still making jewelry.

BFF: What’s your favorite quote or saying?
SHERRI: I can’t think of one right off…

BFF: Any advice you'd give to new artists who are just beginning in your medium?
SHERRI: Don’t be afraid to experiment – cord is cheap!

BFF: What is your favorite blog that you like to follow?
SHERRI: The Beading Gem’s Journal. Pearl Blay scours the world for new and interesting jewelry artists, techniques, tutorials, etc.
Sherri's BSBP entry!

BFF: What has been your favorite Blog Hop or Challenge?
SHERRI: I’ve only done a couple of Blog Hops –in fact, I’ve only had a blog for a couple of months now. One of the things that finally pushed me into starting one was so I could participate in some of the hops.

I’m in the first reveal of LoriAnderson’s Bead Soup Blog Party ® and I’m insanely excited about it (I know, what a geek, huh). I love, love, love looking at everyone’s blogs to see what they made.

Quirky questions often give us a better understanding of the real person behind the artist, so here goes…

BFF: If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?

SHERRI: My own island with a beach. And a huge house with guests houses for friends and family - with a whole wing for beads. Like my own private bead store with EVERYTHING so no matter what I felt like making, I’d have the stuff on hand. And a margarita machine. I know, I know, I was supposed to say “world peace”…

BFF: As a child what was your favorite cartoon or tv show? why?
SHERRI: Land of the Lost on Saturday mornings – so full of cheesy, sci-fi goodness – with dinosaurs mixed in. What’s not to love?!

BFF: Favorite toy as a child? why?
SHERRI: Barbies. Malibu Barbie was the bomb. Or my Crissy doll – she had hair that “grew”(okay, you pulled it out of a hole in her head, but it DID get longer LOL) Oh, and my brother’s Legos. (Editor's Note: I had a Crissy doll too - LOVED her!)

BFF: Favorite subject in school? why?
SHERRI: Probably math. It always makes sense – not really any gray areas, nothing open to interpretation. All is right with the universe. (Editor’s Note: Amen, sister!)

BFF: What was your favorite YEAR of your life thus far? why?
SHERRI: Hmmm… I’m going to say 1998 because both of my children were born by then and my father-in-law and my grandparents were all still alive. All of my favorite people in the whole world were part of my world. I’d love to go back and have just one more of those days just to savor it a little more. I try to remember that and apply it now. Someday I will probably look back with longing on this time in my life. Funny how that works.

Sherri is in my Etsy circle and I have noticed how alike our “tastes”are, and I follow herfavorite links A LOT! I think we are really “soul sisters” because we have so much in common (like my name, it's Shelley Lynn). YES, we share common interests and talents - although I do NOT have the micro macramé gene! I do NOT have the patience or talent it takes to create such beautiful pieces. Thank goodness I can buy all I like from wonderful artists such as Sherri!

Today I am featuring Diana Ptaszynski. She is a new online friend and I love her work as well as her personality. Come and meet her for yourself -

VITALS
* Diana is from “Jerzey”
* She is married.
* No Kids…yet.
* Her pets - 1 serious kitty, 1 quizzical kitty and 1 silly kitty
* Her hobbies are metalsmithing, cycling, antiquing and self-deprecation “(laughter IS the best medicine)”
FUNNY FACE - Her alter-ego!

BFF: What do you do with beads?

DIANA: I play with mud (ie I make porcelain, stoneware and raku beads and pendants). I also make jewelry, although lately it’s mostly for publication or myself.

BFF: How would you describe your role in the beading world?

DIANA: I make art beads for jewelry designers to create with. Ok, let’s just admit it…most of us hoard our art beads.

BFF: How long have you been working with beads?

DIANA: I started making beaded jewelry at the end of 2004 and I began creating my own art beads in the Fall of 2009.

BFF: What is your style? And what attracts you to this style?

DIANA: I’m not certain I have a “style”. I like so many different things… my work is inspired by my love of antiques, nature and random objects. I work in a basement and sometimes I just find things on the floor. Yup, even floor junk inspires me.

BFF: What are your favorite metals to use?

DIANA: sterling silver, copper and brass

BFF: What is your favorite stringing medium to use?

DIANA: Sterling silver half-hard wire if I’m wire-wrapping and soft flex if I’m stringing.

BFF: What is your favorite color palette?

DIANA: Blue and Green. If it reminds me of tropical waters then I’m in love.

BFF: Your technique(s)?

DIANA: I’ve gotten so good at wire-wrapping I could probably do it with my eyes closed. I also enjoy playing with fire, so… raku, torch-enameling and soldering.

BFF: What else would you like to try your hand at?

DIANA: Not lampworking. I tried it a few times with my husband’s set-up (yes, he dabbles in glass) and all I ended up doing is making little glass boogers that fell off the mandrel. I’ll stick with earth clay.

BFF: Other artist/designer(s) you admire? Any special reason why?

DIANA: Diane Hawkey. Her work is colorful, quirky and fun. Joan Miller is also a favorite. Her porcelain is stunningly detailed and can be mistaken for lampwork. AMAZING!

BFF: Where do you want to be in 5 years from now?

DIANA: I have a few big things I’d like to accomplish between now and then but just like with Fight Club, the first rule of Fight Club is you don’t talk about Fight Club. ;-)

BFF: What’s your favorite quote or saying?

DIANA: I don’t think my favorite sayings are appropriate for this forum…hehe.

BFF: Any advice you'd give to new artists who are just beginning in your medium?

DIANA: Take classes, experiment and play! Also, you can contact members of BOC (Beadsof Clay). They are a super helpful group dedicated to earth clay beads. I’m a member of their professional team (BOCPAT) and we do love helping with questions when we can!

BFF: What is your favorite blog that you like to follow?

DIANA: Art Bead Scene. A blog dedicated entirely to art beads…what’s not to like about that? Also, ABS is partially to blame for me becoming an art bead artist.

BFF: What has been your favorite Blog Hop or Challenge?

DIANA: Bead Soup (and anything I’ve run on my own blog. I’ve made so many friends thanks to blog hops.

Quirky questions often give us a better understanding of the real person behind the artist, so here goes…

BFF: If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?

DIANA: A condo on the beach on some awesome tropical island and a funky bead shop/studio filled with art beads and gemstones. (Editor's Note: Well I have a beach and a funky bead shop down the block, so come visit me in the meantime!!)

BFF: As a child what was your favorite cartoon or tv show? why?

DIANA: X-Men. I’ve always wanted super powers besides the ability to chew people’s ears off. (Editor's Note: Okay, that's quirky!)

BFF: Favorite toy as a child? why?

DIANA: My raggy bunny. It’s a stuffed bunny I’ve had since I was real little. I still have her even though she’s quite threadbare.

BFF: Favorite subject in school? why?

DIANA: Not math. We never got along. History is where it’s at!

Last words from Diana -

"When the zombie invasion hits, I'm stealing all your art beads".

Well Diana doesn't seem to want to toot her own horn BUT she is a very talented artist. She has been published in many different magazines including Bead Trends , Bead Design and Bead Unique.

Next week is Bead Fest in Philadelphia and Diana will be there as a vendor - Suburban Girl Studio in booth #564. If you are planning to attend be sure to stop by and check out her work! (I am finally getting to meet her in person - excited!!)

Are you ready for Polymer Clay? Well then today is your lucky day because today's featured artist is Barbara Bechtel!

                                                                                                 VITALS:

 *  Barbara hails from beautiful Merritt Island, FL
 *  She lives with her partner, Mike, who is also an artist.
 * No kids!
 * They have an elderly border collie, named Trouble the Dog and a crazy cat, Charlie.
 *  Barbara’s  first love is painting and she and Mike spend a lot of time thrifting, going to estate sales and auctions! She also loves going to the beach!

BFF: What do you do with beads?
BARBARA:  I primarily make polymer clay beads. I don’t make nearly as much jewelry as I would like, but I do love metal working and I use those techniques in my jewelry, making the majority of my own findings and many focals. Many of the beads I use that aren’t art beads come from estate jewelry (that’s where the estate sales come in handy!)

BFF: How would you describe your role in the beading world?
BARBARA: Right now, I am concentrated on selling my beads but I would love to do more teaching. I really enjoy the connections and friendships I’ve formed since bead and jewelry making became my focus. There are so many wonderful people in the beading community who constantly inspire and motivate me.

BFF: How long have you been working with beads?
BARBARA: I returned to jewelry making about 3 years ago and started making my own beads. At that time, I needed a break from painting. I needed something that was a little more portable as I was going back and forth between Florida and North Carolina. I had taken several jewelry electives my senior year in college and loved them, so it was a very natural transition for me.

BFF: What is your style? And what attracts you to this style?
BARBARA:  Rustic bohemian. I always had a tendency to be a bold user of color, both in my jewelry and my other work. It’s not something that’s a conscious attraction, I’ve always been sort of free spirit in my style, so I think it just comes forward naturally.

BFF: What are your favorite metals to use?
BARBARA: Copper is my favorite metal without a doubt. I never get tired of the different effects that can be achieved with copper! I also love sterling silver but I don’t get to work with it nearly enough!

BFF: What is your favorite stringing medium to use?
BARBARA: Wax Linen. I love the beautiful flexibility of it.

BFF: What is your favorite color palette?
BARBARA: I definitely gravitate towards blues and if I can find a way to tie some coral red in there, I usually will!

BFF: Your technique(s)?
BARBARA: I tend to use a lot of heavy wire wrapping paired with stringing and knotting. In my metal work, I don’t have a big metal working set up, so it mostly revolves around basic torch work, cut and pierced work and cold connections with a tiny bit of soldering.

BFF: What else would you like to try your hand at?
BARBARA: I would love to devote some time to casting.

BFF: Other artist/designer(s) you admire? Any special reason why?
BARBARA:  There are so many and I hate to leave anyone out! I have a special place for artists who work in different mediums. On that note, I think my largest personal inspiration would be Nina Bagley. Her ability to create a seamless narrative between her work through her blog is magical.
Another inspiration would be Cynthia Thornton. I find the way she breathes life into magical creatures across different mediums through her intricate style very interesting. I would love to learn some modeling and wax work from her!

BFF: Where do you want to be in 5 years from now?
BARBARA: I would love to have a studio outside my home. That is a huge personal goal for me. Two self-employed artists under one roof is very intense. There’s very little dissection from our work to our life and the deeper I get into different parts of my work, the more I see a need for my own studio....for my house to be my house, and a studio to be the place for work.

BFF: What’s your favorite quote or saying?
BARBARA:
“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. ... No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others” ― Martha Graham

BFF: Any advice you'd give to new artists who are just beginning in your medium?
BARBARA:  Be true to your own unique voice. Don’t be intimidated by your own perceived lack of knowledge or limited budget. This can be your greatest ally! You may even figure out a better way to do something or a new technique!

BFF: What is your favorite blog that you like to follow?
BARBARA:  Many of my favorite blog aren’t jewelry blogs but I’ll try to list some favorites.
Knack Studios http://knackstudios.com

KAB’s Creative Concepts http://kabsconcepts.com/wp
My Life Under the Bus http://mylifeunderthebus.typepad.com

That’s a very short list of favorites!

BFF: What has been your favorite Blog Hop or Challenge?
BARBARA: I have to admit I’ve only really participated in  Lori Anderson’s Bead Soup Blog Party ® but I try to participate each time. I wish I had more time to participate in all the great challenges out there!

Quirky questions often give us a better understanding of the real person behind the artist, so here goes…

BFF: If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?
BARBARA: my own cottage at the beach that would have a separate building for my studio.

BFF: As a child what was your favorite cartoon or tv show? why?
BARBARA: The Muppet Show...I grew up in a time that was everything Muppets. The Swedish Chef was always my favorite,  and the old guys in the balcony.

BFF: Favorite toy as a child? why?
BARBARA: crayons and a coloring book -hands down. Although,  I also had a mad stash of Barbie dolls.

BFF: Favorite subject in school? why?
BARBARA: art, followed closely by any social studies classes. I had the benefit of taking two different types of art classes and I have so many wonderful memories of projects and processes. I love history, government, sociology/anthropology, languages and geography. I was always fascinated in those classes.

BFF: What was your favorite YEAR of your life thus far? why?
BARBARA: 2007. It was a year with lots of ups and downs for me, but I think it was the year I made some of the best decisions in my life.

So, that's her story...and she should stick to it because she is ONE successful artist! Barbara is currently preparing for Bead Fest in Philadelphia (SECOND SURF Booth #553), so I am very grateful that she took time to come by and talk with us.

Have you ever wondered about the person behind all those luscious glass Lampwork beads? Well today I give you a glimpse, but be warned - though you might find out a bit more than you knew, she seems to still remain somewhat a mystery! With that said, I present - Donna Millard!

VITALS:

* Donna Millard lives in the majestic Midwest
* She has one daughter
* Donna has 2 dogs, a Bichon and an English Setter plus one cat, a Persian named Mr. Boo
* When she isn’t creating Donna likes photography, remote hiking, and snow shoeing.

BFF: What is it that you do with beads?
DONNA: I am a lampwork artist and make an occasional piece of jewelry.

BFF: How would you describe your role in the beading world?
DONNA: I make art glass beads for jewelry designers/collectors around the world.

BFF: How long have you been working with beads?
DONNA: 11 years.

BFF: What is your style? And what attracts you to this style?
DONNA: I tend to go towards organic for the most part. They get pretty labor intensive if I create a large focal bead. By large I mean anything over 40mm end to end. Usually mine are around 50 to 60 mm. I do also make some floral beads with specialized glass canes I make. I am attracted to organic beads probably because of my years living in Alaska, which is a pretty organic place. I'm not a frilly or blingy type of girl so I never make that type of bead.

BFF: What are your favorite metals to use?
DONNA: Antiqued brass, copper and sterling.

BFF: What is your favorite stringing medium to use?

DONNA: I usually use wire for a base of my designs.

BFF: What is your favorite color palette?

DONNA: I really have no favorite.

BFF: Your technique(s)?
DONNA: When I make jewelry I like to weave sterling wire, I do enjoy stringing beads, I etch my own metals, I've done some PMC and electroforming, I solder my own components and so on.

BFF: What else would you like to try your hand at?

DONNA: At this point in my life, I've done what I want to do with the exception of doing digital art and maybe designing websites. Of course, I’d have to go to school and I don't have time or funds to do that. But maybe one day…

BFF: Other artist/designer(s) you admire? Any special reason why?

DONNA: This may come off as being odd, but I really don't even pay attention to what other people are making. I focus on what I do because this is how I support myself.

BFF: Where do you want to be in 5 years from now?

DONNA: Still making beads and selling like I do now but hopefully back in Alaska where I get most of my inspiration from with a larger studio so I can have a small teaching facility. And I'd love to teach abroad.
Editor's Note: From your lips to God's ear, Donna!

BFF: What’s your favorite quote or saying?

DONNA: PPP Practice, practice, practice. I can't stress it enough.

BFF: Any advice you'd give to new artists who are just beginning in your medium?

DONNA: Ask questions, pay attention to what you are taught, lots of practice, trial and error. Make notes of what you do, what works and what doesn't. Good photography is a must in this medium. But most of all - enjoy yourself. It's all about the fun times too.

BFF: What has been your favorite Blog Hop or Challenge?

BFF: If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?

DONNA: A house in Alaska.

BFF: Favorite subject in school? Why?

DONNA: Art, so I could be creative,
I also loved psychology.

BFF: What was your favorite YEAR of your life thus far? Why?

DONNA: 2001, when I moved to Alaska.

In the artist’s own words -

”I haven't had an easy life and because of that I tend to be a very serious and private person. I work 7 days a week and support myself with the glass beads I make. It isn't easy but nothing worthwhile in life is. I love my job, but it does have drawbacks. I don't have a regular paycheck but I can take off whenever I want - though I rarely do. One thing I wish is that I had more money so I could help people. Once, when I was in a more financially stable environment I met someone that needed to have her furnace fixed. It was in Alaska and she didn't have the money and was worried because her house was going to freeze up. I gave her $600, no strings attached. It was one of the best moments in my life knowing I was able to help someone. I would love to be able to do things like that again.”

Well I warned you. If you read between the lines you can see the real Donna. She seems to love solitude and natural inspiration. She is a quiet giver and she pours her passion into her work. I know I speak for everyone when I say we look forward to images of her latest creation. Her posts have ALWAYS elicited loads of “oohs” and “ahhs”. We love her work, and we love Donna too.

Well this week I am happy to be visiting with Kristin Oppold of YaY! Jewelry

VITALS:

· Kristin Oppold lives in Minneapolis. MN
· She is Married
· Kristin has 2 kids
· She has a dog , her buddy Flint – who is a British Lab and her foot therapy while she creates
· Kristen’s other hobbies and interests are making things out of peoples cast-offs (more on this later)

BFF: What do you do with beads?

KRISTIN: I make all sorts of jewelry. I have made cuffs with felt, basic necklaces with wire or stringing. In fact I believe I made the first embroidered felt pendant necklace on the Etsy but as things go with me I didn’t stick with that for very long and didn’t establish that as a brand. I like to try things, they may be popular but if I don’t enjoy making them or they take too long I lose interest.

Coral Cluster Lampwork Bracelet by YaY! Jewelry

BFF: How would you describe your role in the beading world?

KRISTIN: New and learning and taking my beading to the next level. I will be published for the first time in Bead Trends in the September, October, November AND December 2012 issues! I was amazed that my first submission was a success; I was prepared for many denials. I still doubt my talent at times but I love jewelry design so much I’d do without breathing if I had to make a trade...

BFF: How long have you been working with beads?
KRISTIN: 10 years

Kyanite Jewelry Set by YaY! Jewelry

BFF: What is your style? And what attracts you to this style?

KRISTIN: I had very humble beginnings. No money in the beginning and overwhelmed by all the choices. I started out doing more glam. My first order of beads was from MuddBeads and it was all Swarovski and it was a birthday present from my husband. You can barely find Swarovski in my designs today. It took me awhile to find my niche as a jewelry artist. My eye tends to gravitate toward more earthy, tribal and rustic styles in mixed media. I love the textural aspect of mixed media. It attracts me because I am an earthy person and it feels right to me

BFF: What are your favorite metals to use?
KRISTIN: I like all metals but with the cost of Sterling Silver and Fine Silver so high, I have made more with copper and oxidized silver base metals. I like brass okay but I like the silvers and coppers the best.

Ginko Bracelet by YaY! Jewelry
Vintage Purple Necklace by YaY! Jewelry

BFF: What is your favorite stringing medium to use?

KRISTIN: Beadalon 49 Strand or Softflex for stringing. Love leather for tying. I just wish it fit through more beads. I love CLon also…I haven’t used it for a while…I think it is a diamond in the rough! I don’t think jewelry artists have quite captured its full potential.

BFF: What is your favorite color palette?

KRISTIN: I tend to gravitate towards teals and oceanic colors. I like the soothing feel they give my chaotic brain.

BFF: Your technique(s)?

KRISTIN: Stringing, Wirewrapping, Kumihimo, Beginner in metal working and patina. I don’t think you have to be chalked full of techniques to be successful at what you do. A good design aesthetic is number one and if you don’t know how to make components yourself. There is a ton of starving art bead sellers looking to stay alive like you.

BFF: What else would you like to try your hand at?

KRISTIN: Now that is a loaded and endless list of desires!!!! Let’s see Metal Etching, Patina, Cold Forming, Enamel, Lampwork, Cold Connection, Electroforming, Soldering, Fine Silver Fusion the list goes on. What mostly holds me back is time to learn and space. As I said I already have a felt lined house.

BFF: Other artist/designer(s) you admire? Any special reason why?

Kristen: I would buy jewelry from these artists -

Keirsten Giles– Her work is well thought out and designed impeccably. I find it fun and interesting to look at.

Staci Klinger Smith– Her work is interesting, unique and refreshing. I feel at peace just looking at her jewelry. It feels very Zen to me.

Gloria Ewing– Love her tribal jewelry. Great use of interesting materials. Unique and original designs.

BFF: Where do you want to be in 5 years from now?

KRISTIN: I would love to have my own working jewelry studio so I don’t have to worry about burning the house down. My husband doesn’t trust me with fire. Speaking from someone who was gardening with the teapot on in the house ready to launch off the stovetop and leaving the house with the grill on!!!! I can’t blame him there. I would like to make more of my own jewelry components and maybe sell a few.

BFF: What’s your favorite quote or saying?

" I have decided to be happy because it is good for my health." - Voltaire

Vanilla Chunky Czech Statement Necklace
by YaY! Jewelry
BFF: Any advice you'd give to new artists who are just beginning in your medium?

KRISTIN: Make what you love! That was the hardest part in the beginning for me as I like to try so many new things. In order to be successful you have to find your niche and build on that. If you love it – it will sell, if that is your goal. Find your style and buy unique pieces and your jewelry will stand out.
Don’t go for ordinary go for extraordinary.

BFF: What is your favorite blog that you like to follow?

KRISTIN: I am new to the blogging community so I am still learning about all of that and reading different ones. The ones though that I enjoy the most are ones that teach and share techniques in jewelry making. I also like some of the personal stories people write about their life. I think those are inspirational.

BFF: What has been your favorite Blog Hop or Challenge?

KRISTIN: Well I have only been in 1 challenge so far and that was the Sun and SeaChallenge by Creative Bead Chat ( a Facebook group). I missed the Bead Soup one this round and feel left out “CRYING OVER THAT”…so next time I am in for sure!!!!

Quirky questions often give us a better understanding of the real person behind the artist, so here goes…

BFF: If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?

KRISTIN: Selfishly -------My own working jewelry studio decked out with all the latest tools, a couch for a nap and a TV with a DVD player to watch a good movie if I needed a break, a great coffee maker, air conditioning & heating and a front showroom to display and sell my art along with a kitchenette to entertain. Can’t forget an automatic shut-off valve for all things that have fire!

BFF: As a child what was your favorite cartoon or tv show? Why?

KRISTIN: You are going to laugh. I couldn’t wait to get out of church to go home and watch Tarzan & World Wrestling Federation or WWF. I guess I thought girls got the shaft. I hated the holidays with the women in the kitchen clucking over Thanksgiving dinner while the men loafed in front of the television. I wanted to be tough and maybe that was my time to feel like I could live in an altered reality other than the 1950’s household.

BFF: Favorite toy as a child? Why?

Slab Necklace Teal Green - Red Creek Jasper
by YaY! Jewelry
KRISTIN: I love anything creative. I grew up in a small town and resources were minimal for the creative sorts. I used to beg the school to sell me watercolor paper and art supplies. I also love to rock collect thus my love of stone in my designs. My neighbors used to kick me out of their rock beds.

BFF: Favorite subject in school? Why?

KRISTIN: Art for me was a way of expressing myself and escaping. I love my art teacher. She took a personal interest in me and for an overlooked student that really meant something to me. Thanks Mrs. Buehl!

BFF: What was your favorite YEAR of your life thus far? Why?

KRISTIN: All of my years have presented themselves with wonders and different challenges and I have enjoyed them all for different reasons.

As promised here is a little more about how Kristin likes to use other's castoffs in her art -

Upcycled Bag purple & Green Shag Bag
by YaY! Jewelry
"I have a funky wacky side and make Shag Bags out of reclaimed pursed, yarn, fabric and Sari Silk. I also love to make Sock Monkey Coffee Cozies, pillows, flower pins and cuffs out of felted sweaters. My husband tells me I CANNOT start another hobby. I have enough felt to insulate our house! My insanity to create is all consuming and quite an obsession. I have to say though that jewelry is one hobby I have really stuck with and enjoyed. I like the immediate satisfaction. I am not the most patient person. I tried making a quilt ONCE; I finished it but will never do that again!!!!"

******************

Kristin said that she enjoys blogs where the writer shares their personal stories because from them she receives inspiration. I wholeheartedly agree as Kristin's story has given me MUCH inspiration! Her words, her designs - love them!Thank you so much Kristin for giving us a glimpse into what makes up the artist in you!

BFF: As a child what was your favorite cartoon or TV show? Why?

From the first day I laid eyes on Melinda's work I was IN LOVE! From reading her blog I could sense her generous nature. But today I learned much more about what really makes her stand out. I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did, thanks so much Melinda!

This week’s featured artist is Marti Conrad of Marti's Buttons-n-Beads.

Here are the basics:
  • Marti’s real name is Martha.
  • Marti lives in a small town in West Virginia.
  • She has been married for over 30 years.
  • When I asked about children her response was, “Step man, step woman! “ I take it that means she has a grown stepson and stepdaughter, haha.
  • She has two pets, a Japanese Chin rescue dog, named Millie; and a rescued Tuxedo cat, named Quincy. She didn’t say it but from reading her posts I can tell that the rescue of animals is a very important cause to Marti.
  • Her other hobbies and interests are too many to list.

Now that you have the basics, let’s dive in and find out more about Marti’s artwork-

.
BFF: What do you do with beads? (weaving, stringing, lampworking, polymer, etc)
Marti: Mostly just make stoneware beads, pendants and small items. I want to start making wind chimes just as soon as possible. I am not really a jewelry maker, but I've strung some of my beads and sold them around here

BFF: How would you describe your role in the beading world?
Marti: Happy crafter? I just cannot call myself an artist…frustrated one maybe...

BFF: How long have you been working with beads?
Marti: Since 2006/2007. I started out making stoneware buttons to have extra money to buy vintage buttons, I love collecting buttons and other things too! Did some beads and have been busy making them since.

BFF: What is your style? And what attracts you to this style?
Marti: I'm not sure I really have a style just yet. I love using stoneware clay, taking old buttons and nature -inspired things, leaves and such, and using them for patterns and texture. I also just love picking up an item and trying it out on my clay. Some of my favorite textures come from my dogs brush and comb, bones and rocks!

BFF: What are your favorite metals to use?
Marti: My favorite metal is silver…copper is second for me.

BFF: What is your favorite stringing medium to use?
Marti: I started out using a monofilament to string with, but have used silver and copper wire since.

BFF: What is your favorite color palette?
Marti: I love colors. Purples are my favorite right now, but I've run the gamut.

BFF: Your technique(s)?
Marti: I work in stoneware clay as opposed to earthenware because I found earthenware too soft. I would chip it too easily. And I've never tried porcelain because the old kiln I have wouldn't reach the temps needed.

BFF: What else would you like to try your hand at?
Marti: I don't need anything else to do!
(Editor’s note: Now really do any of us need yet another craft? Kudos to Marti who is able to fight the temptation, wish I could!)

BFF: Other artist/designer(s) you admire? Any special reason why?
Marti: There are so many excellent clay artists that inspire me and make me want to do better every day in my work. I don't want to list any one in particular because there are so many and I wouldn't want to leave anyone out!
(Editor’s note: She admires me, OKAY?! She just didn’t want to hurt ya’lls feelings!)

BFF: Where do you want to be in 5 years from now?
Marti: Happy with what I'm doing and healthier.

BFF: What’s your favorite quote or saying?
Marti:so many…Scriptures are my favorite, and anything about animals that touches my heart.

BFF: Any advice you'd give to new artists who are just beginning in your medium?
Marti: Keep at it…you will only get better as time goes on. Read and learn everything you can about your craft.

BFF: What is your favorite blog that you like to follow?
Marti: Again, there are just so many. I enjoy Jean A Wells, Love My Art Jewelry, etc...

BFF: What has been your favorite Blog Hop or Challenge?
Marti: ? Beads of Clay, BOCPAT, ButtonBytes, Bead Soup Cafe, Creative Bead Chat…again…too many!

Quirky questions often give us a better understanding of the real person behind the artist, so here goes…

BFF: If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?

Marti: I would build one of the best Humane Society Buildings (but we are off to a great start with ours here in Ritchie County, WV) and staff it with vets and techs and staff to take care of and help all the animals in this and surrounding counties…after that, my family needs would be taken care of. As it is, we are all doing okay, but with all the money in the world…that would be my dream come true.

BFF: As a child what was your favorite cartoon or tv show? why?
Marti: I was never big on cartoons, my brother watched them, so I had to…lol…my favorite show as a kid was probably Roy Rogers because he had such a beautiful horse and he was one of the good guys! And Lassie, but Lassie always made me cry!

BFF: Favorite toy as a child? why?
Marti: My stick horse, because I've loved horses for as long as I can remember!

BFF: Favorite subject in school? why?
Marti: Did anyone ever have a favorite subject in school? hmmm…I guess my favorite was science, art and reading…I wasn't great in school! Math and grammar were killers for me!

BFF: What was your favorite YEAR of your life thus far? why?
Marti: I guess this one! My little clay business is keeping me busy and I love working with clay. Everyone still living is healthy and happy right now, and so I am too!

Words from the artist , herself:

I have a wonderful life and have been blessed with a great husband, family and friends. And getting online has had its great advantages as well!”

Thanks Marti for sharing...

VITALS:

Real Name? Marlene Cupo
Location? Longwood, FL (just north of Orlando)
Marital Status or Relationship? Married, 44 years & counting!
Children? We have 5 grown children (3 boys and 2 girls) who have given my husband and me, 9 beautiful grandchildren (4 boys, and 5 girls). If you count both, it’s a tie. Wonder by whom and when the tie might be broken?
Pets? Two dogs, Princess (named by our oldest grandson), a cocker spaniel, who believes she has as much right as anybody to be on the sofa, and Pepper (rescue dog), a black labradoodle, who has become my husband’s shadow.
Other hobbies or interests? Is there anything other than Beads? Yes, well I do have an orchid garden of about 40 plants, that deserve more attention than what I give them, but they just keep presenting me with gorgeous blooms. I also enjoy photography, but am definitely in the amateur category. Then, of course, there is that closet full of half finished needle crafts which might get done if I beat Methuselah’s record.

SHELLEY: What do you do with beads? (Weaving, stringing, lampworking, polymer, etc.)
MARLENE: I work primarily with polymer clay. It is an amazing medium that can mimic so many other stones, looks or techniques. When I am creating a piece of jewelry, I often use gemstones, crystals, metal components and art beads from the many talented artists out there, to enhance the design.

SHELLEY: How would you describe your role in the beading world?
MARLENE: I create. I love simplicity in design and my pieces usually fall in the category of “every-day wear” but have enjoyed making more challenging pieces for the many Blog Hops I have entered. I have recently started teaching classes, and love sharing what I have learned with others just starting out with polymer clay.
SHELLEY: How long have you been working with beads?
MARLENE: Polymer Clay, just a few years, although I have had the “creative gene” all my life, for which I credit to my beloved mother. Do you remember crepe paper? She could make anything with it, and more than one bridal or baby shower had her work as a centerpiece. When I was a young teenager, I found a long defunct jewelry company that sold pre-made components and “jewels” you could glue into them. That aforementioned lady would smile and say Thank You, when presented with one, but have since come to realize she was just doing what a mother does.
SHELLEY: What is your style? And what attracts you to this style?
MARLENE: I don’t think I have any particular style. Just when I think I have settled into one, something new catches my eye, and again, thanks to the versatility of polymer clay, I am off trying it. Some of the latest things I have made incorporate symmetry, and then asymmetry, metal work, wire wrapping, and the use of fibers and silks, along with my beads.

SHELLEY: What are your favorite metals to use?
MARLENE: Right now I am in love with copper. The shades and hues of it complement so many different colors. For wire wrapping I like to use silver, as it is so malleable. I suppose gold would be too, but since I don’t own a mine at this time ….

SHELLEY: What is your favorite stringing medium to use?
MARLENE: Soft Flex Beading Wire, 49 strand, which is so flexible and drapes so softly in necklaces. It is also nylon coated, so there is no worry of it damaging any of the beads.

SHELLEY: What is your favorite color palette?
MARLENE: I find myself drawn to the colors of the ocean and forests (blue and green). Autumn also has an amazing and endless array of possibilities.

SHELLEY: Your technique(s)?

MARLENE: Smooshing clay (that is an actual word). Once it has come out of the pasta machine, as a Skinner Blend, a mica infused sheet, or shapes that are placed one on top of each other, the things that can be done with it are endless, whether a lentil bead, a stamped and antiqued pendant, applied alcohol inks or patina, a Mokume Gane sheet, a millifiori cane or hand shaped flowers, to name just a few.
SHELLEY: What else would you like to try your hand at?
MARLENE: Well, I have no desire to learn anything that would cause my home to burn down, such as lampwork. I can tend to be clumsy. Seed Bead work fascinates me, but I know I don’t have the patience for it. Sculpture is something I have wanted to expand into but my few attempts, until now, are in the hands of my son.

SHELLEY: Other artist/designer(s) you admire? Any special reason why?
MARLENE: You ask this question of everyone you interview, and I understand their reluctance to name others, for fear of leaving someone out. There are SO MANY fantastically talented artists out there. To name just three, I would have to say, Lea Avorch, the lampwork artist extraordinary, has to be on my list. There is also a sweet lady in AZ, Lupe Meter, who floors me every time I see another of her Southwestern themed creations. Cindy Lietz is a great polymer clay artist, who shares her love of it, and knowledge with so many on her video site.

SHELLEY: Where do you want to be in 5 years from now?
MARLENE: Besides breathing? On a Disney Cruise with hubby, our five kids, and all the grandchildren.

SHELLEY: What’s your favorite quote or saying?
MARLENE: The same one I had in my nursing school yearbook: "Thou crossest desert lands of barren years, to reach the moment of fulfillment "- Togare
SHELLEY: Any advice you'd give to new artists who are just beginning in your medium?
MARLENE: Learn, work at and with it. Experiment. Ask questions. Keep trying; realize there are no mistakes with polymer clay, that can’t be fixed. Above all: Have fun!

SHELLEY: What is your favorite blog that you like to follow?

MARLENE: Why yours, of course!  (READER: Insert YOUR name here!)

SHELLEY: What has been your favorite Blog Hop or Challenge?
MARLENE: I would have to say Lori Anderson’s Cup of Soup Challenge, which I was fortunate to back into. It challenged me to go above and beyond, to come up to the level it deserved.

Quirky questions often give us a better understanding of the real person behind the artist, so here goes…
SHELLEY: If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?
MARLENE: The biggest state of the art research center, that the scientists and researchers who worked in it had the best opportunity to find cures.
SHELLEY: As a child what was your favorite cartoon or TV show? Why?
MARLENE: We did not have a TV until I was about 12 years old; by then it was American Bandstand, daily, right after school.
SHELLEY: Favorite toy as a child? Why?
MARLENE: Actually I had two. That naked doll (who didn’t have one of those) but with all kinds of bandages and band-aids, I could pilfer when mom wasn’t looking. Guess that was a forecast of my future nursing career. The other was a book entitled “365 Bedtime Stories” for obvious reasons. I cried when the coverless, torn and stained pages had to be thrown away.
SHELLEY: Favorite subject in school? Why?
MARLENE: Mathematics, it came naturally to me. The sciences were great too, which I have come to find out are linked to anyone with a mathematical mind.
SHELLEY: What was your favorite YEAR of your life thus far? Why?
MARLENE: I couldn’t begin to give you an answer to this one. They have all been memorable, even if not that “favorable”, because they have all led me to where I am now. As content as I can be.
SHELLEY: Anything you’d like to add, Marlene?
"Many people consider me an enigma. I have been privileged to care for the sick and dying, and also love a good joke, or pulling a prank on someone. I can be serious and silly all at the same time. I am often misunderstood, especially by my kids, but that does not bother me. I know who I am, because I made me this way. "
I know you too Marlene. You try your best to be a toughy but you have a heart of gold, you aren't fooling me Sister!  XXOO

Miss Marla, Miss Marla, just a few more questions....
....how did you get started? How did you learn? Do you have any specific time of day when you work? What's your day job...

And the popular Miss Marla stops just as she was about to get into her limo, turns around and answers these extra questions with poise and grace...

What a great interview! Thank you both for making this possible. I have been a BIG fan of Marti's work for a couple of years now and I just know that once other jewelry designers figure out just what a quality product she produces she will have to buy another kiln just to keep up!

First let me state the obvious...Vixen is such a cutie! AND second let me state the obvious...YOU HAVE A LOT of stuff in your spread out studio. LORD I thought I had put away a lot in prep for my retirement (which is not really retirement once you decide to sell your jewelry and other creations! Just the marketing and social media updating, its FULLTIME work, so get ready!) Geez its so much to play with! ANd I can only imagine what is in those black cases in the hallway!
