PAINTING #7: Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge – Elaine de Kooning

I am taking part in Leslie Saeta’s “ Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge”.

I have chosen the NEW YORK SCHOOL as my theme.  CLICK HERE to learn more about it. I am creating a painting based on a quote of one of its member artists, not their technique.

Painting 6, I call it "Within Isolated Cells":

“Women can also be creative in total isolation. I know excellent women artists who do original work without any response to speak of. Maybe they are used to lack of feedback. Maybe they are tougher.
~ Elaine de Kooning, Member of the New York School

My opinion is - MAYBE we ARE!

Elaine de Kooning (1918-1989), born in Flatbush,  was an Abstract Expressionist and Figurative Expressionist painter in the post-World War II era. She wrote extensively on the art of the period [7] and was an editorial associate for Art News magazine. 1

PAINTING #6: Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge – Barnett Newman

I am taking part in Leslie Saeta’s “ Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge”.
I have chosen the NEW YORK SCHOOL as my theme.  CLICK HERE to learn more about it. I am creating a painting based on a quote of one of its member artists, not their technique.

Painting 6, I call it "Shifting":

When painters feel the need to make a shift toward self-discovery, they turn to black and white for a time. “

~ Barnett Newman, Member of the New York School

I don’t need an excuse to paint in black and white. Those two are my staples, like milk and bread. Simple but complex, it’s all in the eye of the beholder!

Barnett Newman (1905-1970) was an American artist, born in New York City. He is seen as one of the major figures in abstract expressionism and one of the foremost of the color field painters. His paintings are existential in tone and content, explicitly composed with the intention of communicating a sense of locality, presence, and contingency. 1

PAINTING #5: Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge – Lee Krasner

I am taking part in Leslie Saeta’s “ Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge”.
I have chosen the NEW YORK SCHOOL as my theme.  CLICK HERE to learn more about it. Each of my paintings will be inspired by a quote of one of it’s member artists.

Painting 5, I call it "Alone Time Flow":

“I need to be alone for certain periods of time
or I violate my own rhythm.”

~ Lee Krasner, Member of the New York School

Detailed photos

I can relate. I can’t paint unless I am alone. The ideas won’t flow unless I’m by myself. The way my mind works, I tire when I have too much conversation or movement around me. It zaps my energy and with it my creativity. I’ve been known to disappear from a gathering because I MUST get by myself and recharge. I start out fine but soon I need to go back into my shell. Anyone who doesn’t know me probably thinks I am anti-social.
I think I am a bit of an introvert.
But then other times I am an extrovert.
I’m just a weirdo.

Lee Krasner (1908-1984) was an American abstract expressionist , born in Brooklyn, NY. She is one of the few female artists to have had a retrospective show at the Museum of Modern Art. She worked in painting, collage painting, charcoal drawing, and occasionally mosaics. She would often cut apart her own drawings and paintings to create her collage paintings. She also commonly revised or completely destroyed an entire series of works due to her critical nature. As a result, her surviving body of work is relatively small. 1

PAINTING #4: Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge – Jackson Pollack

I am taking part in Leslie Saeta’s “ Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge”.

I have chosen the NEW YORK SCHOOL as my theme.  CLICK HERE to learn more about it.

Today’s quote from one of the New York School artistsL

It doesn’t matter how the paint is put on, as long as something is said.”

Jackson Pollack (1912-1956) was an American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was well known for his unique style of drip painting. He used paint pouring as one of several techniques on canvases. Later, he began painting with his canvases laid out on the studio floor, and he developed what was later called his "drip" technique. He used hardened brushes, sticks, and even basting syringes as paint applicators. Pollock's technique of pouring and dripping paint is thought to be one of the origins of the term action painting. 1

Blue Poles (1950)

Each day of this challenge I work on a painting using the artist's quote as my inspiration, not the technique.  Today is supposed to be about the painting saying something. I can't really tell you what my painting is saying. Maybe it's just saying - Nothing to see here, move on please.

My Painting for Day 4 of the challenge inspired by his quote:

A bonus share: My friend and fellow artist, Betsy Walcheski of Art by Bets, did something very clever this holiday season. She and her family decorated cookies in Jackson Pollack style!

PAINTING #3: Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge – Robert Motherwell

I am taking part in Leslie Saeta’s “ Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days Challenge”.

I have chosen the NEW YORK SCHOOL as my theme.  CLICK HERE to learn more about it.

Today’s quote from one of the New York School artists:

Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was an American painter, printmaker, and editor. He was born in Aberdeen, Washington. He was one of the youngest of the New York School (a phrase he coined).2 His paintings, prints and collages feature simple shapes, bold color contrasts and a dynamic balance between restrained and boldly gestural brushstrokes.1

Je t’aime (1955-1957)

No, art is not an object. It isn’t just something to be seen and touched.3

Art is an encounter. It’s a journey. It isn’t always pleasant. It doesn’t always lead down a path with a final destination. It’s just life.
My life now, and j'aime ça.

My Painting for Day 3 of the challenge, inspired by his quote:
