Returned from my trip to NC and I had a little setback. Working my way back to the plan.

Went by the doctor's office - I am down 11 lbs.

Well I had the tastiest dinner last night! Yes, I cooked again (3rd day in a row!!!). Wasn't sure what I was going to eat but Mel said he was making Chicken Parm for himself, asked if I wanted any. Since he had fried his chicken in oil I said "Heck NO!"...then I challenged him to a cook-off.

I used a recipe I found on Hellmanns.com for Parmesan Crusted Chicken. It called for bread crumbs but I substituted with ground flaxseed mixed with Italian seasoning. I also used fresh parmesan cheese. I ate a 6oz piece of chicken topped with 2-TBSP of Ragu® Chunky Pasta sauce.

Going into the oven....

Served up!

I paired the chicken with a simple salad of fresh spinach leaves (1/4 cup), tomato (1/4 small) and provolone cheese (1 oz). I topped it with Low Carb/Calorie Ranch dressing (just 1 TBSP was plenty). I got the recipe from Sparkpeople.com

I mean not only did I win the cook-off, I had a great meal and my hunger was totally satisfied.

Most of my friends know that I had weight-loss surgery (WLS), Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, back in March of 2011.

Initially, over like 7 months, I lost about 90 lbs. Well as the story goes, some WLS patients gain weight back after a few years - AND of course that would be ME!

So I decided to look into "resetting my pouch". When you have the surgery they basically make your stomach smaller. Your stomach ,referred to as your pouch, is then about the size of an egg.  (More info at WebMD)

ANYWAYS.... you have some eating guidelines to follow and lots of vitamins to ingest. You need to follow the rules for the rest of your life to be healthy and maintain your weight loss.

Well I didn't. At first I couldn't eat much. If I ate too much I would get the pain in my stomach. There were some things I couldn't even touch as I would get real sick.

I finally found something I could eat, pretzels. I started with a few back in 2014 and worked my way up to almost 3/4 of a big bag per day! I actually got addicted to them (the carbs). I had them with coffee in the morning and with soda any other time.  Soda is a no-no. Drinking with any food is a no-no. I found out that my pretzels are referred to as a "slider food". Definition: Empty calories that slide right through my pouch! No nutritional value, just calories!

So I looked into the whole 'reset' idea and lucked upon the "5 Day Pouch Test" by Kaye Bailey. It's not about losing weight during the five days but rather getting back to the basics and learning to follow the post-WLS eating plan. It sounded simple enough so I decided to give it a go AND take you along on my journey.

Fast Forward...I made it through day 1 and 2 which is all liquids. TODAY is day 3 - soft proteins. On Kaye's site she gives great information as well as recipes.

I tried the recipe for Parmesan Tuna Patties - was great with a little hot sauce on the side! This recipe calls for flaxseed, which I never had before. According to WebMD it is called the most powerful plant food on the planet. Benefits include lowering your risk for cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Here's a few photos from my cooking session...YES, I actually cooked!

It's my plan to share along my way, it will keep me accountable. Can't say it will be every day but I will try my best for once a week. Hope you will join me on my journey back to a healthier weight.

P.S.
Kaye has several great books. I bought the Manual and am planning on getting a few of her cookbooks.

Good luck on your journey!!! I would like to pass on some info as a friend that literally saved my life years ago and I honestly believe that I likely wouldn't be here today without the life changing steps that I took. Everything I learned came from the book The China Study, the short documentary Forks Over Knives and ongoing my "GO-TO" resource for nutritional information www.nutritionfacts.org Dr. Greger is AMAZING!!!!!!! I strongly encourage you to take a look at this life changing information and again I wish you nothing but the best on your journey!!!! xoxo

Way to go Shelley you will feel so much better. I am a big pretzel lover. I eat less food all day just so I can have my pretzels. I may have to re think that. I have a good weight and have always worked to keep it down but now I have bone issues because of that. It is crazy. Thank you for sharing your story.

Don't forget to get a lot of calcium for your bones while you're changing your diet. My doctor actually told me that the supplement wasn't as good as the real stuff because our bodies don't absorb the supplement as well. (I asked about that because I wasn't getting very much milk). I've changed that! ^_^

Good shamrocks on your journey and stay healthy!

<3,
Andrea
